VATICAN CITY — Papal bodyguards overpowered a woman who rushed at Pope Benedict XVI, yanking him to the ground Thursday as he entered St Peter's Basilica to celebrate Christmas Eve mass.

Video footage showed the woman, dressed in a red sweatshirt, jumping over a security barricade and rushing at the 82-year-old pope as he began leading the traditional procession of about 30 cardinals to the vast basilica's altar.

She was immediately tackled by a security guard, but succeeded in grabbing Benedict's vestments near the neck and yanking him to the ground, according to video footage taken by a pilgrim broadcast on Sky News.

Several others fell over in the melee.

Prominent French Cardinal Roger Etchegaray, 87, broke a leg in the incident though he was "several metres (yards)" from the pope, Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi told AFP, adding that the prelate was rushed to hospital.

The woman is in the custody of the Vatican police, the ANSA news agency reported, adding that she said she wanted to hug the pontiff.

Lombardi said she may have been the same woman who tried to approach Benedict on the same occasion a year ago without getting past the security barrier.

After the incident, Benedict quickly recovered, and bore a gold cross in a solemn procession to the altar as the mass began at 10:00 pm (2100 GMT).

Dressed in gold and white vestments and mitre, the pope showed no discomfort as he read out his Christmas Eve homily, decrying selfishness, which he said "makes us prisoners of our interests and our desires that stand against the truth and separate us from one another.

"Conflict and lack of reconciliation in the world stem from the fact that we are locked into our own interests and opinions, into our own little private world," the spiritual leader of the world's 1.1 billion Catholics said in Italian.

Thursday's incident occurred amid concern over the pope's health prompted by a Vatican decision to schedule the mass two hours early this year instead of the traditional midnight hour due to the pontiff's advanced age.

Lombardi insisted earlier that the change, a Vatican first, was only a "sensible precaution" for the octogenarian pontiff.

The decision was taken several weeks ago. Lombardi said the change was "no cause for alarm," adding that the German pontiff's condition was "absolutely normal" for a man of his age.

Lombardi said the move was aimed at making Christmas "a little less tiring for the pope, who has many engagements during this time".

On Friday, Pope Benedict is to deliver his traditional "urbi et orbi" (to the city and the world) message broadcast to dozens of countries at noon on Friday.

Benedict has had no notable health problems since his 2005 election apart from a fractured wrist from a fall in July while holidaying in northern Italy.

Four years before he became pope however, then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger spent nearly a month in hospital following a brain haemorrhage, according to the German daily Bild. It said he has suffered from fainting spells.

Pope Benedict's long-serving predecessor John Paul II insisted on observing the tradition of beginning the mass at midnight despite years of ill health, notably the ravages of Parkinson's disease, at the end of his life.

He died in April 2005 aged 84.

It's not clear to me, was the little boy cut by mistake while getting a
haircut or was it deliberate as some sort of blood right of passage? If
it was intentional and all little boys go through this, is it any wonder
why people/culture in that part of the world are so violent?

The Israelis probably see this and shake their heads wondering if that
little kid will join Hamas at eighteen and start crossing the border with
bombs strapped to his back.

Not sure the Emperor allows it, but what remains for me is this huge gaping
disparity, how can you have the princess here elevated to a Goddess-like
status where her every word, movement and activity is monitored twenty-four
hours a day, and then have the tens of thousands of Japanese girls, who end
up in Japan's sex/entertainment industry waiting on men?

Unlike Princess Di, who actually had some modicum of empathy for the peasants,
Princess Masako here lives a life so completely removed from the reality of what
it's like to live in Japan, it amazes me how Japanese people shit all over
themselves when she drives by and waves from the protected shelter of her

Makes me wonder how an unworthy/unqualified person, man or woman, can remain atop the hierarchy totem pole for a length of time and maintain any relevance while the real alpha types are left cleaning up this shit of their masters. Humans are a strange bunch, the critters, one can become alpha by mere deceit and economic dominance, since we live by a hierarchical model, wouldn't it be a more natural law to have physical combat to see who should be the dominant sadist of society? Fixes to the Wild Hog Problem

Experts have several suggestions for how to stop the spread of wild pigs:

--Give state authorities more resources to curtail the transport of wild pigs across state lines. According to Jack Mayer, a scientist with the U.S. Department of Energy's Savannah River National Laboratory in Aiken, S.C. and a feral swine expert, pigs cannot be taken to another state without veterinarian documentation that the animals are healthy -- a step few are taking when releasing hogs into a new environment. "Most states have laws against releasing them into the wild," Mayer said. "But that hasn't stopped most of the people who are doing this."

--When a wild hog population is detected, do a better job of removing them. In North Dakota, efforts to eliminate wild pigs were successful in part because federal and state agencies worked together, according to Carol Bannerman, of the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). Also helpful was the fact that private landowners realized the importance of getting the pigs off their property, Bannerman said.

--Make it easier to kill the pigs. Rep. Mike Conaway, R-Texas, has said he wants wild hogs to be classified as livestock "predators" or nuisances, much like coyotes and bobcats are. As such, more government resources would be available to kill the pigs.

--Discourage the public from feeding feral pigs, and enforce rules against releasing the pigs into the wild. Seth Swafford, who leads the U.S. Agriculture Department's feral pig tracking efforts, says states are considering toughening penalties for releasing pigs into the wild.

--Promote research to develop edible methods of swine birth control. Several scientific teams are trying to develop a reliable way to limit pigs' reproduction, according to Mayer. "The game plan is that they eventually will be able to have male birth control put in bait," he said.

WASHINGTON – A federal judge dismissed all charges Thursday against five Blackwater Worldwide security guards accused of killing unarmed Iraqi civilians in a crowded Baghdad intersection in 2007.

Citing repeated government missteps, U.S. District Judge Ricardo Urbina dismissed a case that had been steeped in international politics. The shooting in busy Nisoor Square left 17 Iraqis dead and inflamed anti-American sentiment abroad. The Iraqi government wanted the guards to face trial in Iraq and officials there said they would closely watch how the U.S. judicial system handled the case.

A 13th-century letter from Genghis Khan’s grandson demanding homage from the pope is among a collection of documents from the Vatican’s Secret Archives that has been published for the first time.

The book documents the Roman Catholic Church’s often hostile dealings with the world of science and the arts, including documents from the heresy trial against Galileo and correspondence exchanged with Erasmus, Voltaire and Mozart. It also reveals the Church’s relations with princes and potentates in countries far beyond its dominion.

Another formal letter in the archive highlights the papacy’s political role. In 1863 Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederate States, wrote to Pope Pius IX claiming that the civil war raging across America was entirely due to “Northern aggression”
