NSA Verizon Phone Records: Dianne Feinstein, Saxby Chambliss Defend Data Collection

The leading senators on the Intelligence Committee Thursday downplayed the significance of the National Security Agency’s mass collection of Verizon phone records as others voiced outrage over what they viewed as a gross invasion of privacy.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., told an impromptu news conference in the Capitol that the NSA phone record data-collection effort is legal under the Patriot Act. She suggested that uproar over the government poring over the records is overblown, pointing out that the data collected is “metadata,” or information about the phone calls, including the length of the calls and the phone numbers involved in the conversations, not the content of the calls. Feinstein said the phone calls weren’t wiretapped, such as did occur illegally without warrants by the NSA under the George W. Bush administration.

“It is lawful. It has been briefed to Congress,” Feinstein said, according to Talking Points Memo. “This is just metadata. There is no content involved. In other words, no content of a communication. … The records can only be accessed under heightened standards.”

Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., echoed Feinstein, saying the court-approved phone records collection has been standard procedure and that lawmakers are briefed on the program.

"This is nothing particularly new," he said. "This has been going on for seven years under the auspices of the FISA authority, and every member of the United States Senate has been advised of this.”

Chambliss even went so far as to say that the program has been a help to the war on terror, although he did not say to what extent the data collection has been used in counterterrorism efforts.

“It has proved meritorious because we have gathered significant information on bad guys, but only on bad guys, over the years,” the Georgia senator said.

Since the Guardian’s Glenn Greenwald broke the story about the Verizon phone snooping, critics of the program say the tactics are a violation of civil liberties. Some are also skeptical that the government isn’t listening in on Americans’ calls without warrants.

National security expert John Miller of CBS was asked on “CBS This Morning” if the skepticism about listening in is valid.

The NSA “better not be, because everybody at the NSA knows if they’re listening in on American citizens without a very special order or ruling from their lawyers, they’re going to jail,” Miller said. “That was the rule of thumb. They’re the most conservative agency about that, probably of any [agency], sometimes to a fault.”

A Texas jury acquitted a man for the murder of a woman he hired as an escort, after his lawyers claimed he was authorized to use deadly force because she refused sex.

Ezekiel Gilbert shot Lenora Ivie Frago in the neck on Christmas Eve, after she denied his requests for sex and wouldn’t return the $150 he had paid her, according to the San Antonio Express-News. Under Texas law, an individual is authorized to use deadly force to “retrieve stolen property at night,” and Gilbert’s lawyers cited that provision as justification for Gilbert’s action, reasoning that Frago had stolen $150 from him by taking his money without delivering sex. In a police interview played for jurors, Gilbert “never mentioned anything about theft,” a detective told the San Antonio Express-News. Frago, who was 21, was critically injured and died several months later.

While the shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Florida has generated notoriety for NRA-backed Stand Your Ground laws, which authorize the unfettered use of deadly force without a duty to retreat in defense of one’s person or home, Texas’ exceedingly broad law goes well beyond this, to allow deadly force in protection of any piece of “tangible” or “movable” property.

The Texas provision authorizes deadly force not only to “retrieve stolen property at night” but also during “criminal mischief in the nighttime” and even to prevent someone who is fleeing immediately after a theft during the night or a burglary or robbery, so long as the individual “reasonably” thinks the property cannot be protected by other means.

This shockingly broad statute authorizes individuals to take not just law enforcement, but punishment, into their own hands and impose death for alleged offenses that would never warrant the death penalty even if the person were convicted in court. But even in light of the expansive vigilante justice made legal by the statute, it is difficult to see how Gilbert’s behavior was justified, given that escorts are not entitled to deliver sex under the law, and delivering sex for money is an illegal transaction.

$25 gadget lets hackers seize control of a car

After journalist Michael Hastings's death, there were rumours that his car had been hacked. Now two researchers say they can do it for real

IN THE early hours of 18 June, a Mercedes coupé travelling at extremely high speed along a Los Angeles street smashed into a palm tree. It exploded into flames, killing the driver; the impact ejected the engine 50 metres clear of the car. Was it an accident? Or was the car hacked, allowing it to be driven off the road by remote control?

The very idea might sound crazy – but it's one that Richard Clarke, a former counterterrorism adviser to the US National Security Council, has raised after the driver was identified as Rolling Stone journalist Michael Hastings. Known for his revealing articles on the US military and its intelligence agencies, Hastings had emailed colleagues the day before he died to say that he was going "off the radar for a bit" to chase down a "big story".

"What evidence is available publicly is consistent with a car cyberattack," says Clarke in a Huffington Post interview. Intelligence agencies, he says, can remotely seize control of a car to make it accelerate wildly or brake suddenly, for instance.

Clarke cited research, carried out for the US National Academy of Sciences, showing that "connected cars" – equipped with built-in cellular technology used by dashboard apps and engine-monitoring software – can be hacked remotely. But proof that it could be done in practice has been lacking.

That looks set to change on 27 July, when Spanish engineers Javier Vázquez Vidal and Alberto Garcia Illera will give a demonstration at the Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. They have built a $25 device that lets them bypass security in a car's electronic control unit.

The brains of a modern car, the ECU is a computer that controls engine power, transmission and braking. Mechanics can diagnose faults by plugging a laptop into it via standard wired connectors such as the CAN bus. Alternatively, remote diagnostics and software updates can take place over a cellular network, as happens with services such as General Motors' OnStar and Mercedes-Benz's Mbrace.

Vázquez Vidal and Garcia Illera will show how their device – which they claim uses a $1 chip to break encryption – can read from and write data to the flash memory of commonly used ECUs, made by Bosch of Germany. In this way, they can get more horsepower out of a car, or tell it to burn less fuel. "And it would take no time to gain total control over a vehicle – deploying an airbag, activating the brakes, or immobilising a car at any moment," says Vázquez Vidal.

How they have done this is unclear. "My best guess is that they have managed to put the ECU into an unencrypted test state, possibly by playing around with power-up sequences," says Peter Highton, a senior engineer with Freescale Semiconductor in Aylesbury, UK, which makes ECU microchips for racing cars as well as ordinary vehicles.

For security, connected cars should use encryption, but Highton says carmakers are only just coming to terms with it. "Until as recently as five years ago, data on the CAN bus of most cars was unencrypted, and so could be intercepted and altered."

Whatever the causes of Michael Hastings's crash, the need to make cars secure against hacking will only become more acute. The next version of Vázquez Vidal and Garcia Illera's device won't even need plugging in to the target car. "I am already working on a wireless version," Vázquez Vidal says.

More than 100,000 people have applied to take a one-way trip to Mars in order to colonize the Red Planet, the mission's organizers say.

Participants on the Mars One project, which is planned to start in 2022, would spend the rest of their lives there, CNN reports.

Mars One CEO and co-founder Bas Lansdorp said the first crew's mission would cost $US6 billion, which would be paid for by sponsors and media companies in exchange for broadcasting rights of the group's colonization of Mars.

"What we want to do is tell the story to the world. When humans go to Mars, when they settle on Mars and build a new Earth, a new planet. This is one of the most exciting things that ever happened, and we want to share the story with the entire world," Mr Lansdorp said.

This year the Mars One project only plans to pick 40 out of the thousands of applicants. Just four of them will participate in the first mission, which will leave in September 2022 and land in April 2023. Another group of four will leave two years later. No one will return to Earth.

Astronauts must complete eight years of training, and will be required to carry almost 2500kgs of "useful load" to Mars. But that won't include much water or oxygen - Mr Lansdorp says the astronauts will manufacture that on Mars.

"We will evaporate [water from Martian soil] and condense it back into its liquid state," he said.

To apply you must be over 18 and must pay the application fee, which varies based on each country's gross domestic product per capita.

"We wanted it to be high enough for people to have to really think about it and low enough for anyone to be able to afford it," Mr Lansdorp said.

But space travel experts are not convinced the project is viable, citing concerns over radiation and the fact that humans have never travelled the distance to Mars.

There seems to be some dispute whether this will actually happen or not, due to the radiation of space. But it doesn't seem to be stopping these guys from trying to get to Mars. Can't say I blame them. Hell, what's a little radiation, compared to the constant Earth nonsense, right?

Gotta admit, it would be fun looking out of the window of your space ship and flipping the middle finger at this infested planet, and saying "Ha! Bye Bye Suckers!," while knowing your own doom is sealed, perhaps before you even make it to Mars.

Mankind's urge to explore has pretty much been quelled over the last couple hundred years or so, it's like it's in our genes to explore the unknown, discover said unknown, and then fuck it up. Don't think anyone will stop humans from exploring space, despite initial tragedies.

Some years back I once traveled thru a wormwhole. By that I mean my astralbody left my physical body and got sucked into a wormwhole flushing me thru a ultra fast energy tunnel. I could still feel my physical body on my bed..but I was literally in two places. I felt how my pupils would close or widen depending on how much light they would receive from stars that I past while speeding thru. The most crazy feeling indeed because you usually don't "feel" the process of the pupils widening or closing. It's interesting to note here that the physical body reacted to a astral body experience! I knew this was special, I was totally aware and not under any kind of influence...

Then at the end of this wormhole I was drifting in space and there was some foggy green light..that's all I could see, but I knew that I had reached the outer most part of our galaxy. Then all of a sudden I [my astral self] was pulled back into my body.

I had two conclusions:

1. Time does not seem to exist inside wormholes, I wasn't able to tell how much time had passed, even though I tried very hard to pay attention to everything as much as I could while having the ecperience.

2. That whatever you can do with machines you can achieve also without, that we are immortal beings, that we have extraordinary abilities, that we are more free than we can imagine, and that we are in the right place.

It was one of my life's most beautiful experiences. Matter of fact, it was so intensely beautiful that I for one would never want to go on such a trip sitting in a NASA space can and snailing at LULZ speed ..haha, no no !

This 'material only approach' isn't my thing I guess; there are way more sophisticated ways to travel thru this universe, i am totally convinced about that.

I would agree that technology is just an attempt to re-create our own extra-ordinary and superior abilities.

I still remember the experience of "falling" down a wormhole while still a baby in my crib...and being observed by unseen malevolent beings lingering in the peripheri of my physical sight. I can remember this today just as vividly as when it actually happened and never got the true meaning of it or why it happened to me. My mother tells me I used to come to her with detailed stories of my astral body leaving my physical and unusual dreams...all prior to the age of six before I was even aware of what and out of body thing was.
That ability and those experiences began to decay to just flying within my dreams and eventually out of body experiences ceased by about age ten.
Then my dreams became more...sexualized.

Like you said, some kind of 'presence', but which I only became aware of afterwards, when I was already back in my body. The feeling I had was "they don't like it when we do this"..

This is interesting.

I will elaborate more as this is perhaps the most profound dream of my lifetime...and one I never understood.

While I was descending down into this "wormhole" it was myself and my lying in my actual crib descending, not just my physical body.
I and the crib were falling down, not at a fast speed, but the crib was also slightly spinning or rotating as it fell.
I was not seeing things from my own eyes outward, but I was looking down at and upon myself lying in the crib from an above perspective.
This tunnel I was falling down seems it would have been typically pitch black dark, but as I was descending I was illumined by a light coming down from above. Like a spotlight from above. And I was traveling within this light and not outside of its edges into the blackness. Perhaps the light was protective, but it was the only thing allowing me the light to be able to observe myself falling.
It is in the blackness that I could sense there was the presence of numerous "other" things. But I could not see or hear them.
I sensed they were staring at me intently, a large group with many eyes upon me.
The emotion they gave off was a dark, cold, interpenetrating malevolence related to...ENVY.
A "sneering" envy was definitely what they felt...so deep an envy they wished my annihilation.
Not necessarily the desire to hurt me physically or my physical death, but that the part of me that is the "I" was annihilated...as if in reference to what one would consider the soul.

It is in the blackness that I could sense there was the presence of numerous "other" things. But I could not see or hear them.
I sensed they were staring at me intently, a large group with many eyes upon me.

That reminded me of of a "manic episode" I had about a decade ago, brought on by extreme stress, lack of sleep, depression, loss, and anxiety.

The feeling or sense of another presence, or intelligence that couldn't be seen, felt, or heard. It was just "there." I won't go into all of the details right here, but it was one of the most extreme experiences of my life. After all these years, there seems to be a sort of harbinger or haunting imprint upon my psyche, that seems to be triggered by certain circumstances.

Beyond hellish, beyond all conceived doom. I experienced levels of fear that each level practically had its own ecosystem. I was under the impression, at the time, that I was being shown levels of fear in the universe impossible to be perceived by man. It was like there was a ghost world overlaid the real world, and I was walking in and out of both, but under the spell of illusion, as to which was real or fake.

It's this experience alone, that makes me chuckle whenever someone brings up the subject of Hell (in any tradition.) Laughable and generic iconography to me. Took me years to overcome what I experienced. Though I'm still haunted by the fact that I don't share this experience with another person, and have been forced to try to make sense of it. Couple that with the mundane possibility of a chemical imbalance in the brain that might have just produced nonsense. I will never know.

It was like a horrible acid trip that lasted for literally three weeks. I hear a lot of people whining about a bad trip that lasted 12 hours or so, I am living proof that a bad trip, brought upon by whatever means, can be extended longer than that. It felt like I was being mentally and spiritually tortured for eternity, and I had to experience the sense of that long impossible passage of time under the laws of that dimension.

I've only shared this with a few close ones, and they all tell me that they think I have some sort of PTSD because of it.

My question is, is that you two experienced something metaphysically dark, as did I. Why are some of these experiences so negative? My best guess is, whatever negative forces are concerned with humans, must be the forces in control, to some of extent or our mental and spiritual existence. Objectively, I see no evidence whatsoever, of a cosmic signature of Mercy in the universe.

It does make me wonder about the push/pull -yen/yang relationship of the universe. Maybe the problem is, is that the problem isn't dualistic. We humans think in such a black/white manner, and in emotional contexts, that maybe we are missing the point of what is good and evil (in any cosmic sense).

We have our obvious moral laws that we all agree on, but for what true purpose, other than to keep the species going? On a gigantic cosmic scale, we're really just a micro dot in the middle of a black corner of space.

Maybe good (in a cosmic sense), is the continuity of whatever the fuck human beings are designed to do, good, bad, the whole shebang. Personally, in my own speculation, I have this horrifying intuition that mankind may be property. Property, in the sense, if we are to take ancient traditions at their word.

To whom or what, I do not know. Again it's just an intuition, but one that makes some sort of sense to me, in a "Beyond Good and Evil" possibility.

What humans perceive as moral justice, may not be of a similar moral justice system to *fill in the blank* whomever or whatever may be responsible for our creation. I wonder how many religious people have pondered the possibility that if a God exists, that the meaning of "Be fruitful and multiply" simply means "GO FUCK YOURSELF."

I think humanity depends less on superiour forces for our wellbeing then we are taught to believe, which does not mean that asking for help from such entities is detrimental. I have prayed in times of great danger and/or when I hoped for a certain beneficial outcome concerning a certain situation - and it wasn't short of real miracles. I don't need to know how it works, only that it works..right!

On two other occasions I was 'contacted' by superiour forces, one in form of an aparition, another one in astral form in sort of an emergency to help me...so good forces might decide to contact you by their own admition in cases which they deem necessary I would reckon.

So my own conclusion is that the superiour forces that are benevolent to humanity isn't "hunting us down" and respect us, while those superiour forces that we experience as anti-human & vicious might not care about keeping their anger & hate to themselves...I mean there must be a reason why they dispise us...and maybe some of them actually do regard us as property or even a food source, who knows...

Is this wormhole experience a lucid dream experience where a different dimension of consciousness is penetrated which operates outside of our physical worlds limiting parameters of time and space as we are taught to experience them ?

Unfortunately these experiences still go under the burning bush category which in itself may have just been a metaphor for intelligent energy communications from non-physical-human source
Im not doubting you had them or anything, but the bottom line for me is this :-
No matter what people have experienced , its only ever useful in its ability to bring wisdom to other humans (which you have done (: )
Wisdom being defined as an evolved ability to navigate through the battleground of influencial forces that prey and assist each personas human psyche which if navigated well, continually enhances and educates the life experience in an inspirational manner that actually makes life feel like its worth living
Wisdom in action is a language that can only be detected at the subconscious level and can inspire people to transcend their existing limited life experience which is far more important than it sounds because it determines how each person develops or inhibits their own wisdom which controls how they interact with other humans in this world in a destructive , creative or nurturing fashion .

Is this the state by which famous TLE sufferers such as Vincent Van Gogh, Feydr Dostoyevsky, Socrates, Philip K Dick and William Blake found their inspiration; their 'Daemon of Creativity'?
