• "Final Verdict on Nat Rothschild: Greed Head and High Level Marketeer for Russian Thugs So… er, I think the tide is pretty much turning on the Nat Rothschild story. Below is a summary of some of the Nat Rothschild reviews over the weekend, which paint the man being treated last week as a chivalrous knight of white light as something rather more murky:
  
  1) He has never been instrumental in actually making any investments at his hedge fund Atticus (his partner David Slager did all that), he just uses his extensive network of dodgy contacts to raise capital for the fund (as reported in the Sunday Times):
  
  A rival fund manager dismissed Rothschild as "a marketing guy," saying: "He brings the Rothschild name and stamp of authenticity to the organisation. He is a smart guy but he's not calling the shots on the investment side."
  
  2) The letter he sent to the Times last week was likely an attempt to divert attention from his oligarch pal/client Oleg Deripaska, by shining light on Osborne, in which case he's not altogether clever as all he's basically done is wet the public's appetite for more scandal around the Mandelson / Deripaska / Osborne trio (again from the Sunday Times):
  
  Rothschild's intervention has deflected attention from the oligarch, his fortune and his links to Mandelson and set the spotlight squarely on Osborne, which was perhaps Rothschild's plan. The financier has staked his all on making it in Russia, where his ambition to become the richest Rothschild has long seemed more easily achieved than it would be elsewhere.
  
  3) Atticus, Nat Rothschild greed vehicle, has lost buckets of money recently, and there is speculation that some of the Russians that Rothschild may have wooed to join the fund are now yanking their money out asap (Sunday Telegraph):
  
  Speculation raged that Nat's finances were under pressure.
  
  With the Russian stock market collapse, some of the oligarchs whom Nat advised were struggling financially while Atticus was also performing badly. Rumours had been swirling in the markets that the fund, which is down 45% this year, was close to collapse because Nat's Russian contacts were brutally withdrawing their money. But Atticus has said that it does not rely on Russian investors and is not threatened by redemptions but rather has distanced itself from its co-chairman.

  4) At Oxford he was basically a prat (Sunday Times):
  
  On one occasion at Oxford, Rothschild is said to have jumped onto a table and shouted: "Ninety-seven million!" – which some took to be a reference to the size of his trust fund…. At Oxford, Rothschild was also one of three founders of a student newspaper called Rumpus, which was sold at news-agents for 30p.
