Kraftwerk, haven't heard this in years - German, no?

I love that Joy Division song, Kapis! Thanks for posting that. Now you've inspired me to make a post about Joy Division.

Joy Division. There are times/places in my life where their music is the only music on Earth that I can possibly listen to in those times/places. I have no fucking idea why that is. It's almost like my mind and soul gets so burnt out for whatever reason, that I literally don't even have the energy or life force to listen to anything else!

Certain songs of theirs strike such a chord in my head that I must have entered a similar mental state that the musicians might have had when they created those songs. Ian Curtis was one of the most mentally tortured musicians I've ever heard of, he literally had epileptic seizures on stage! His suicide note was pretty much written in every one of his song lyrics. How this was missed by most people as a cry for help is beyond my comprehension. His lyrics are true art.

There is an interesting JD documentary I watched where the remaining members mentioned that they never even payed attention to Ian's lyrics, and not until after his death, did they realize that he was literally speaking about his own life in his lyrics. I can't imagine how they must have felt after that realization.

It almost seems like Ian Curtis couldn't even remain alive due to the severity of the extreme epileptic seizures were having on him, that is my speculation. I still don't come across much music that exhibits so much emotional honesty and realism as Joy Division did. Their music is just as relevant today as it was back then.

Another interesting thing I'd like to add is, that time and place I mentioned of when and where I listen to Joy Division is NEVER during the following: Sunny afternoons, pleasant moods, times of new found love, peace of mind. No, Joy Division is played when life can't get any darker. It's like the music of Joy Division is a vehicle that will help one get through the transport into or out of an abyss.

Some of the most vivid memories I have are simple memories of sitting alone in some sort of mental state of oblivion spinning the albums Unknown Pleasures, and Closer. In some insane way, they are some of my most beloved memories.

It's also weird that there is no way it is possible to listen to these songs with other people. I remember an ex girlfriend and I were driving and listening JD, she had never heard of them before, and I thought she was going to have a mental collapse. So there is certain music that affects other people differently, and I wouldn't dare project such music on another soul ever again.

Musically speaking, they had it all as far as a standard rock band is concerned. Each musician had such a distinct identity to their sound. The drummer had such a chaotically repetitive style for the music of that time. The guitar player had his own unique almost choral like tone, that was usually just complementary to the rhythm of the bass. Such a unique and original approach to music that started the spark to the whole post-punk phenomena that, in my opinion was never equaled again.

Lastly, I will add one last opinion about Joy Division. I find it ironic that their debut album came out in 1979. I was only two years old, so of course I had not heard of them, at any rate, I find it ironic that this band seemed like the final nail in the coffin of happy dappy 60's music, and the dancing disco of the 70's. It's like JD ushered in a new era of music that was totally personal and so dark that we saw glimpse of what was to come in the 80's: everything from the advent of angry hardcore punk, death metal, black metal, doom metal, etc... Joy Division came before all of that stuff, in almost a prophetic way.

There are only a handful of bands that has that ability to strike such a chord in my mind, and those bands are Joy Division, Burzum, Death in June, Life of Agony, and Neurosis, and probably some others I can't think of off the top of my head right now.

Maybe its not so bobdogmatic of me to express my ideas on philosophy and metaphysics through a song instead of my usual long-winded posts. I feel like I've connected much more with what I was trying to say by singing it instead of saying it.

For me, music is the highest (most profound) expression of magic. I hope it reaches you...

I realize that my lyrics can appear a bit naive when life hands you a shit sandwich, but entropy abounds amongst our common planes of existence and therefore, I feel I must aim high. Besides, I am compelled to discover a solution that is at least equivalent to the problem, if not greater. Otherwise, what's the point? There is no intrinsic utility in suffering for the terminally sane.

I like your song Bobdog. Its a great pleasure to get to see such creative expression. I'm listening to it now as I write. I would say something about a flat vocal note here and there, but then I would have to record myself attempting to sing and share it with you. The sound of my singing voice is somewhat like a nasally, croaking, flat whine. When I try to sing its like all of a sudden I've lost the ability to properly enunciate. I couldn't subject anyone to such a horrible sound.

Yeah, my voice is definitely a "work in progress." I'm a baritone so I really have no business grabbing for those high notes. Then again, you should see the tin can and string I'm singing into down here.

Thank you for listening and nice to talk to you again! By the way, I clicked on that link you provided for your avatar and found all the other paintings. One of them has the same woman in a different pose and if you look closely she's holding what I believe is a flail. There was some symbology there for me in that I was reminded that I am my own worst critic. It allows me to take solace in the fact that no one else can truly intimidate me because I am harder on myself than anyone else ever could be. There's a lesson in there somewhere for me.

I have been thinking about the revelation of truth as well recently , because i do understand that to reveal can unintentionally hurt, so that raises another question about being tactfull , but then again , being tactfull , means that the truth is compromised , i mean ones subjective truth

So maybe i have to consider that there are 2 truths, there are subjective truths and then there are spoken truths

The conscious i has the free choice to either speak all the subjective truths or only some of them
This choice will vary with each person they encounter and the particular relationship between them

But no offence was intended with that comment , although i was aware that by saying it , it could cause insult , but maybe i thought you could see it for what it was , absolute subjective truth but without the conscious intention to insult

as i said, i applaud all attempted creative self expression , even if it did not move me , because it certainly moved others

Kapis - I didn't find your comments "intimidating" at all. That last post of mine was for Blackbird, but I forgot to address it as such. There was no "inferrance" whatsoever to you. While I was composing it you posted before me. That's all. As for your opinion of my song, it is a worthy opinion. Sincerity is the highest compliment. And everyone on this site seems to me to speak from their hearts/minds in very honest ways. As far as I'm concerned, if there was a problem with what you said, it would be mine and mine alone. How could I hope or expect or want to post anything upon the public domain and receive only hugs and kisses? If everyone liked my song then I would be very suspicious. Thank you for being considerate of my feelings, however. Someone told me that no one else has the power to make me "feel" anything; that I choose to "feel" whatever I may. This was at first unnerving, and then later empowering.

Bobdog, insightful commentary on the version of the Magdalene painting with the flail. Reminds me as well about my own often overly harsh self-criticisms. I was also told quite some time ago about how no-one can make you feel anything. I didn't understand at the time, but now I do see how "empowering" this is. The ability to see how ones-self chooses to react or respond. I put it this way in one of my previous posts...No one spoon feeds me anything. Unless I want them to and they offer, but you see even then I am still the one deciding.

Kapis, I read your post regarding the revelations of truth. The two truths, subjective and spoken. The one being a truth that is more kept to oneself and the other a spoken truth. When critiquing or answering honestly one others work or when asked an opinion, I think its possible to be truthful while not compromising that personal truth with tact or diplomacy. Like you said it would be dependent on the situation, and the relationship.
I've had this conversation with my sister. She is more inclined to speak bluntly, and thinks the ideal communication should be one in which both parties say it like they see it without censoring in any way. I agree that this would be ideal. I sometimes wish it could be this way all the time, but this way of communicating would only work if mutually understood that there is no harm intended, no sideways insult in the purely uncensored, honest expression.
She likes to tease me sometimes by calling me "the diplomat" or "peacemaker" when she sees me as she says "sugar coat my opinions". Indeed I do this, when I think if I were to say bluntly whats on my mind, then it would be misunderstood as an insult or not received well.
I think there is this middle ground where one can speak their truth as they see it, and simultaneously give attention to an awareness of the other parties individual and particular sensitivities.

I tend to be accomodating, myself. Rarely have I witnessed confrontation with mutually beneficial conclusions. I lost my competitive nature a long time ago. Whenever you have a "winner" then you also usually have a "loser". I think I dislike losing more than I enjoy winning so I'd rather be neither.

Besides, for me there's much more utility in comedy than confrontation.

Yeah, angels represent to me a symbol of life. I was thinking it might help me find some balance against all these skull tatoos. Life and Death...I don't seem to be fully engaged in either one.
