Up until now, in the television series, the prisoner , no one has been sure of the meaning or even the symbolic meaning of the entity known as "Rover", but here is a new theory on its symbolic meaning, pat macgoohan had made a series exploring and revealing the physical and metaphysical "relevant " or "relative" meaning of individual freedom in our society , his character is an ex-spy whom decides to retire but then wakes up in a strange unlocated village giving the impression of normality where most people are drifting through daily lives in a consensus trance secretly controlled behind the scenes by knowing others. Whenever macgoohan or others attempt to escape from this village, once past the usual hidden defences , they are often confronted by a giant flexible moving ball which seems to suffocate them into unconcsiousness after which they then wake up once more still a prisoner in the village . This "Rover" entity may have been macgoohans secret message of his belief in the flat earth theory , that even when one escapes from their apparent prison on this earth , there is an even greater prison that restricts and contains them as a prisoner which is their unshakeable belief in the absolute non-prison (the earth globe -apparent cosmic representation ) that contains the the village earth tangible prison, this beleif system itself is a bigger prison than thev apparent prison they think they just escaped from but is unknown to them in a higher consensus trance that holds both the entranced and the ones who thought they were not entranced, layers and layers of intrigue indeed (:
