Re: Jazz and Deep Down Stuff
sounds pretty well like the later zeppelin version apart from the lead singer , "feel like a mouse and you act like cat" etc etc man these lyrics are profound beyond their simplicity i think his lyrics better than plants version

ID-Entity
Identity is the crisis can't you see
Identity identity
When you look in the mirror
Do you see yourself
Do you see yourself
On the t.v. screen
Do you see yourself in the magazine
When you see yourself
Does it make you scream
When you look in the mirror
Do you smash it quick
Do you take the glass
And slash your wrists
Did you do it for fame
Did you do it in a fit
Did you do it before
You read about it
Re: Jazz and Deep Down Stuff
It can be seen and heard in that live Yardbirds that the drummer and the vocalist have a few hiccup moments trying to move along with Page.
Great rendition but the schism as to where Page wished to go was evident and eventually they disbanded.
Then...the sweet spot...no limits...

Re: Jazz and Deep Down Stuff
yeah brilliant rendition there too, theres a good multi-part interview with jimmy page on you tube, cant remember if its an mtv one or some other one on his career , also mentions the fall out between r plant and david coverdale when coverdale teems up with page and they do some old z numbers with coverdale sounding eeerily more like plant than plant himself on many songs
Re: Jazz and Deep Down Stuff
Coverdale had established himself with Deep Purple and Whitesnake. His success with Whitesnake during the late eighties peaked his career. After that, his career waned and Page was not doing much of anything other than perhaps drinking too much. So they paired up and made an album. I am not crazy about that album, but many liked it...and anything to here a few Page riffs was always welcomed.
Robert Plant had negative comments regarding this duo. Plant once made some derogatory comments to Page in the company of others about how the project produced inferior garbage and Page had to tell Plant that was enough and shut him down quickly. But Coverdale was actually hurt by Plant because for many years prior to the duo forming, Coverdale had always invited Plant to attend concerts as an honored guest and Plant would attend. Coverdale was expecting Robert to congratulate him on his success for which he knew Coverdale had worked so long to achieve. But Plant put him down instead. Coverdale was very much affected by this from someone he respected and thought respected him.
Plant has a streak about him in this regard.
But I do consider the Coverdale and Page collaboration to not be that good and other than Whitesnake, it does seem that Coverdale's performances and vocal style is a bit forced and over the top in some respects.
So Plant may not have been wrong in his criticisms, but just rude and inconsiderate while lacking tact when voicing them. But perhaps he was being painfully honest.

Re: Jazz and Deep Down Stuff
I dont rate any of the post z-goup individual pursuits, maybe apart from plants big-log single (: in their case , it seemed to me, the four collective parts far exceeded any individual part , which maybe not always the case with musical groups that often carry a couple passengers
Watching that coverdale performance with page doing the old z-numbers, i think i can see how plant would be upset, coverdale looking and sounding like him , doing his stuff, probably a bit of territorial jealousy , these lead singers usually hyper vain and also probably page being aware of that stimulus trying to rattle the plant for turning down a reunion show or something (:
On the page interview i mentioned he goes into the amount of attention they gave to try and create new sounds , was a complete creative project, not like nowadays when everything made much easier from technology
The z cover of "When the levee breaks" being a masterpiece of sound innovations using old building acoustics to get this haunting beat - superb

Re: Jazz and Deep Down Stuff
I don't see how Plant could have been upset about it because he and Page had not made any efforts to perform together at that particular time.
Plant was promoting the highly commercial Now and Zen album and even sold out to Coca Cola for sponsorship, a concert that I had attended.
And Plant was using this venue to perform his solo album materials and Zep songs with a talented guitarist that was not Page.
Page was touring with Coverdale and doing their album songs and Zep songs.
As Coverdale was about as close to a Plant-style vocalist that was available and could pull it off with some level of authenticity for the audience.
So both Plant and Page did their separate tours and both did Zep songs on those tours.
No harm no foul on both their parts.
And everyone knows that Led Zep was Jimmy Page's baby and he had the established reputation in the music business, had already in a successful group the Yardbirds, did most of the writing, had the most studio-recording experience, and had the most money to back the group up.
Plant was a 19 year old nobody doing small clubs.
So if anyone had the right to perform Zep songs while on a solo tour without the other Zep musicians it would have been Page, and he certainly had the right to do so without Plant flapping his yap. IMHO.

The groups Heart and Great White do the best Zep covers I have ever heard...

Re: Jazz and Deep Down Stuff
Yes thats an excellent performance by great white,
Ive got a vague memory that page said in a interview he was ready for a reunion and plant was too busy self indulging , so he had to look elsewhere, but id have to trawl through it some time to check out if it was around coverdale time
Page definetly the most important member and in my opinion folowed by my 2nd favourite bassman ad multitalented musician john paul jones, followed by plant and his buddy bozo with all four far exceeding the indie efforts, plus a little help from some occult practice, which page is never prepared to go into in depth in public - who could blame him (:
